I was really impressed with the information that was given in Stephen Downes article, Educational Blogging. He was able to convey the impact that blogging has developed and how it has reached the mainstream.
And ultimately, how this tool is slowly being incorporated and utilize in the educational school system. The author made some really strong points on how effective this tool can be for the students and for the purpose of learning.
The effectiveness of blogging for students is that this tool allows for the student to write and share his/her opinions for the classroom and for the world to read and comment upon.
This forum allows for the students and instructor a medium to voice and comment their opinions on the material that is being taught.
But on the downside that the author also raises is that if there is censorship when blogging that places restrictions and defeats the 'spirit' in which blogging originated from. Also, when students are told what to write about without the having any interest in the material that in itself is another defeat in the spirit of blogging and becomes a laborious and tedious tasks for the student.
Overall, I feel that having the educational institutions recognize the importance and value that blogging can serve to enrich and develop the learning in students. Then I believe that that benefits outweigh the faults that blogging has.

Learning for the 21st Century

The appeal in this article is the growing concerns among students from Kindergarten to the 12th grade that they are not receiving the proper basic learning skills and knowledge required and expected from them in a 21 Century society and workplace.
The article tries to emphasize on the SIX Elements of a 21st Century Education that includes:
1. Emphasis on core subjects
2. Emphasis on learning skills
3. Use of 21st Century tools to develop learning skills
4. Teach and learn in a 21st Century context
5. Teach and learn 21st Century content
6. Use 21st Century assessments that measure 21 Century skills.
From this article, the element that spoke most strongly to me was teaching and learning in a 21st Century context; because I feel that the easiest way to learn is to understand how the material connects to the individual’s life.
From my perspective it’s hard for students to understand complex, ambiguous ideas and thoughts without any real substantial connection or relevance.
Students need to know and understand how and what they are learning are going to impact upon their lives and what survival skills they can take from the learning the material will affect their lives.
Without real connections, the material doesn’t remain impactful to the student.

An interesting point that the author, George Siemens, connects is the idea of Language and Learning. He states that with the invention and re-invention of print that is the core foundation in how people learn.
From the beginning of verbal thought, ideas and learning was communicated through the passing of word of mouth.
And with the invention of print, ideas and learning was able to spread dramatically. And now, with the internet, communication of idea is being able to delivered anywhere in the world.
The power of language, ideas and thoughts, are being able to communicated and being learned from anyone across the world. There are no limitations and that is the power of CONNECTIVISM.

What I know about WEB 2.0
But from what I was able to gather in that class was the impression that the WEB now is a much more larger community where people of similar interest get together to build a informational structure that is non-static along with interactivity.
I hope to learn more about this exciting medium during the course of this class.
